Spelunking basically means caving; an activity that involves entering and exploring the internal caves and structure of the island. La Palma has become a top class volcano-spelunking location. There are a wide range of places on the island where the sport can be practiced. It's widely recognised as the best Canary Island for the sport and draws massive numbers of spelunking amateurs and geologists every year.
The most important groups of caves on the island are in Villa de Mazo. The area is packed with some fascinating volcanic tubes, of which Todoque cave offers the most varied possibilities for spelunking. Because of its length, peculiar shape and extensive fauna, it has become a favourite amongst amateurs and geologists from all over the world. |
