The municipality of Barlovento is located on the northern part of the island. It has a population of over 2,500 people. The town is surrounded with picturesque valleys, hills and fresh green fields.

Besides the Igelsia de Nuestra Senora and some 16th and 18th Century Spanish sculptures, there isn't really that much to see in the town. There is, however, an excellent festival held every 2 years, called the Fiesta de la Virgin del Rosario. This is Barlovento's main claim to fame; everyone's heard of it. Every two years in August, villagers and holiday-makers get together and recreate scenes from the battle of Lepanto in 1571. It's colourful, lively, very friendly and the partying goes on well into the early hours.

Places worth checking out in the surrounding areas include: the Piscinas de Fajana (6kms to the north), where you can take a dip in an idyllic rock pool, that's kept cool by the surrounding Atlantic Ocean; and the nearby lighthouse (Punta Cumplida) that has been going non-stop since 1860!
